White Bunny Fly - Tying Instruction

White BunnyI’ve been using this one heavily all season with excellent results in various colors and combinations of colors. You can mix a dark tail with a light body, etc.

Hook:     Size 6 to 2 streamer hook
Thread:   6/0 white Uni-Thread
Tail:      White Rabbit strip 1/4 inch
Flash:    Gold, pearl, or silver Flashabou
Weight:  Lead wrap length of hook
Body:    White Rabbit strip 1/4 inch, palmered.Step One

This is a very basic design, but the rabbit fur palmered all the way forward gives it a lot of life.

Lead WrapStepTwo
We’re jsut looking for something to sink it here. Various weighted heads can also be used. Weighted this way, the fly dead drifts better than a weight forward tie, like using dumbbell eyes or coneheads.

Quality control:
Place a bead of Zap A Gap near the tail section where you will lay the rabbit strip. It’s a bit tough to see but I allow for about three inches of tail and lay some flash material on top of that, I’m experimenting with the length of the flash, keeping it not more than two inches, StepFourhoping it won’t foul StepThree02into the tail..

Glue on the Junction where the tail goes. If you use a separate piece (different color) for the tail, a hard bit may pull it off if not glued down.

Lay in the flash and then begin wrapping the rabbit strip forward (Palmering), carefully pulling back any forward facing hair, allowing the wraps to hold back the hair in a rear facing direction. In other words, give it that “wind blown” look.

Wrap up to within a quarter inch of the eyelet and tie off, creating a small head area. Whip finish to end. I use a close-pins as a handy clamp to hold back hair and feathers before applying head cement or something else like Wild Shine fingernail polish that has tinsel bits inside the concoction.Step Five

Step SixPainting on Eyes - Not!
Instead of taking the time to paint on eyes, I use this stuff to give it an interesting flicker and it saves time. I don’t like the added time and hassle of painting on fancy eyes the fish could care less about. I also don’t care to epoxy on a hard head that takes added time away from tying more flies much less fishing.
